The night I almost missed Tokyo — and what saved it
I pressed my forehead against the cool arrivals-hall glass. It was 23:47. My flight from London had landed sixteen minutes late, and my body still thought it was 3 PM somewhere above Siberia.
Around me, fellow passengers were squinting at train maps and calculating whether the last Keikyu had already gone. It had. The app had been pitilessly clear: Last departure 23:44.
But I wasn't worried. Not this time.
My phone buzzed — a WhatsApp message from a contact I'd saved as Tokyo Driver / Jay:
"Your flight landed 16 minutes late — no problem at all. Take your time through immigration. I am in the arrivals hall, Gate 1 exit, holding a blue sign. See you soon."
I exhaled for what felt like the first time in fourteen hours.
Jay had been driving private airport transfers out of Haneda for six years. In that time he'd met executives flying in for 7 AM client meetings, families with four children and nine bags, honeymooners who'd never left their home country before. He knew, from the moment someone walked through those arrivals doors, whether they needed a warm welcome or just five minutes of quiet before conversation.
Me? I needed both. He seemed to know.
The Toyota Alphard was parked in the private transfer bay — not the taxi rank, where a queue of thirty-odd people stood in the October chill. Jay loaded my two suitcases while I sank into a rear seat that felt closer to business class than a car.
He asked where I was staying. Shinjuku, I told him. He nodded, tapped the satnav, and pulled smoothly into the expressway flow. Tokyo began to materialise outside: elevated highways shining in the rain, ramen signs in kanji I couldn't yet read, convenience stores glowing open at midnight like small warm promises.
Forty-three minutes after leaving the arrivals hall, I was handing my passport to the hotel night manager in Shinjuku. The night manager was printing my key card. I handed over my passport and thought: that is how Tokyo arrivals should always feel.
